SPARK BENCH | the Park Bench that Sparked an Earth Building Movement

SPARK BENCH is a park bench made of Oregon Cob -- which is just a fancy name for earth: sand, clay, and straw. It was built over Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, 2004, by first-time cob builders, ranging in age from under eight to over eighty! This bench will be the spark of a new earth-building movement in Toronto.

SPARK BENCH is located in the backyard of Alan O'Connor, at 196 Manning Avenue, four blocks west of Bathurst Street, just south of Dundas Avenue, in downtown Toronto, Canada. Classes of the Anarchist Free University are held in Alan's home, so the bench will also be used by the anarchist community of Toronto.

Credit is due to everyone who participated in the building of SPARK BENCH: Kate, Sarah, Vicki, Amber, Lori, Doug, Alan, Jeff, Peter, the two Nestels, Yehuda and Hadar, and all three generations of the Gilbert Family! Huge thank you to Ben Polley who donated the straw bales, and to Sean Gallant, who donated all of the clay and sand, and transported it right to the site!
