Give It Away #1
Let's Get Free

The supermarkets are stocking the shelves with Matzoh-meal, and the ad agencies are entreating us to celebrate with Pyramid-size savings... yes, Passover is upon us! But beyond the consumer abstractions, Passover is the holiday when we are instructed to recollect and retell the biblical narrative of our slavery and exodus. But there are more forms of slavery in the world today -- from oppressive sweatshops to child prostitution -- than at any other time in history! Burdened with this depressing realization, how can we possibly celebrate our own freedom when so many more are incarcerated?

In the face of these physical facts, maybe we need mull over the mystical. There are two New Years on the Hebrew calendar: one in the fall, on Rosh HaShanah; and one in the spring, on the Rosh Chodesh (New Moon) of Nisan -- two weeks before Passover. These correspond to the two equinoxes, the only two days of the year when the amount of daylight is equal to the amount of darkness. So as we start to celebrate Passover, the holiday of spring, let us think a bit about the fundamental forces of God's cosmos, entropy and extropy -- in layman's terms, things falling apart, and putting things back together again.

We say that it is our task as conscious human beings to be active agents of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. We are charged with this task at all times, but especially so on the holiday of Passover. If the Divine Intention kindly spared us from the plague of poverty in 5770, let us not ignore the many houses that the Divine Chaos visited destruction upon in the past year. Let us celebrate the spirit of Freedom by sharing it with as many people as possible. This Passover, may we become spiritually rich by emancipating ourselves and each other.
